Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 2025

This privacy policy explains how thevatcalculator.io handles your personal data. We have written it in plain English because privacy policies written in legal jargon tend to get ignored, and we would rather you read it.

Who we are

thevatcalculator.io is a UK-based website providing free VAT calculators for business owners, freelancers, and sole traders. If you need to get in touch, contact us.

What data we collect and how

Analytics data

We use Google Analytics to understand how people use this site. This helps us see which calculators people find useful, which pages have problems, and how visitors find us in the first place.

Google Analytics works by placing a small piece of code on your device called a cookie. This cookie collects anonymous information, including which pages you visited, how long you spent on each page, the general area of the country you are in (not your precise location), and what type of device and browser you are using. It does not collect your name, email address, or any information that identifies you personally.

We only load Google Analytics after you have given your consent. When you first visit the site, a banner at the bottom of the screen gives you the option to accept or decline cookies. If you decline, Google Analytics is not loaded at all and no tracking cookie is placed on your device. If you accept, the cookie is set and analytics will run on future visits.

The calculators themselves

The calculators on this site do not send any data to us or to any third party. Any figures you type into a calculator stay on your own device. Nothing you enter is stored, transmitted, or recorded anywhere.

Advertising

This site may in future display adverts through a third-party ad network (details will be updated here when advertising is introduced). If advertising is added, this privacy policy will be updated to explain which network is used, what data they collect, and how you can opt out of personalised advertising.

How cookies work and how to control them

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your device when you visit. Cookies are used for lots of different purposes. On this site, cookies are used only for analytics (if you consent) and to remember your cookie preference so we do not show you the consent banner on every visit.

To withdraw your consent or change your cookie preferences, you can clear cookies at any time through your browser settings. Below are instructions for the most common browsers:

  • Chrome — Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data → tick Cookies and other site data
  • Safari — Settings → Safari → Advanced → Website Data → Remove All Website Data
  • Firefox — Settings → Privacy and Security → Cookies and Site Data → Clear Data
  • Edge — Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Clear browsing data

If you clear your cookies, the consent banner will reappear on your next visit and you can make a fresh choice.

Your rights under UK GDPR

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

  • Know what data we hold about you. Because the analytics data collected by Google Analytics is anonymous, we cannot identify you from it. If you believe we hold personal data about you, contact us and we will check.
  • Ask us to delete your data. Because analytics data is anonymous, we cannot identify and delete a specific individual's records. For any other personal data we might hold (for example, if you contacted us by email), we will delete it on request.
  • Complain to the regulator. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can contact the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
